The best electrical work often happens before the walls are even closed.
When most people picture an electrician’s work, they think of the finished sockets, switches and lights. What many don’t realise is that some of the most important decisions are made long before any of those are fitted.
We’re currently carrying out the first-fix electrical installation during the complete refurbishment of a property in Tiverton. Good planning now means fewer compromises later.
The clue came as soon as we walked onto site. Instead of working around an existing installation, the property had been stripped back to its structural shell, giving us a genuine blank canvas.
It’s easy to assume that first fix is simply a case of running cables from A to B. In reality, this is the stage where every cable route, accessory position and future connection needs to be carefully planned before the walls are closed and the plasterboard goes up.
Working with the exposed structure allowed every cable run to be planned and installed methodically, coordinating with the building work and creating an installation that will be safe, practical and easy to maintain for years to come.
By the time the refurbishment is finished, none of this work will be visible. The cables will be hidden behind plasterboard and the only things on show will be the finished sockets, switches and lighting.
Sometimes the most important part of an electrical installation is the part that’s hidden behind the walls.
