Thinking about replacing your fuse board? Perhaps an electrical inspection has highlighted a problem, you’re renovating, or you want to add sockets or an EV charger.
At Two Moors Electrical, we start by looking at what you already have and what you want to do. We explain the options, recommend a suitable solution and give you a written quotation covering the work.
We carry out consumer unit replacements across Tiverton and Mid Devon, including Halberton, Bampton, Cove and Silverton.
Back to topAn older fuse board deserves a proper assessment. Its age alone doesn’t tell the whole story.
We look at its condition, the protection provided, the existing wiring and any changes you’re planning. Sometimes a specific repair or alteration is appropriate. In other cases, replacing the consumer unit makes more sense than adding another separate box to an installation that has already been extended several times.
Common reasons customers contact us include:
Replacing the consumer unit improves the protection serving your circuits. It doesn’t replace the wiring throughout your home, so assessing and testing the existing installation is an important part of the job.
Back to topOur consumer unit upgrades include individual RCBO protection, surge protection and a fire suppression device as standard.
Individual RCBOs combine protection against earth leakage, overloads and short circuits for each circuit. This helps limit disruption when a fault occurs, rather than having several circuits share one RCD.
Surge protection helps protect the installation and connected equipment against short-lived voltage surges.
A fire suppression device forms part of our standard installation specification. We explain the equipment included in your quotation.
We also consider the arrangement of the wiring, the main supply cables to your consumer unit, earthing and bonding. Any planned upgrades, cable extensions, enclosures or relocation work are set out in the quotation.
Back to topWe assess the existing installation and discuss how you use the property, including any future work. If you have solar panels, outbuildings or plans for EV charging, we take those into account.
You then receive a written quotation explaining what we propose and what is included.
We normally ask customers to plan for the electricity to be off throughout the first day. We agree the arrangements beforehand, including any essential equipment you depend on.
We remove the old consumer unit, organise the wiring and install the new equipment. Our aim is to restore power by the end of the day, once the necessary checks have been completed. On larger installations, we discuss which essential circuits can safely be restored first.
We commonly return on a second day to complete the remaining inspection, testing and finishing work. The exact programme depends on the size and condition of the installation.
Occasionally, testing reveals an existing wiring fault or an issue with earthing or bonding that needs attention. We explain what we’ve found and discuss any additional work and costs before proceeding.
We label the circuits, tidy the work area and show you how to operate the new consumer unit, including the test buttons.
Back to topHalberton: an upgrade following an EICR

A customer selling their property asked us to carry out an EICR. The installation had accumulated several separate protective devices, and our inspection identified that the electric shower lacked RCD protection.
We discussed adding protection for the shower and the alternative of consolidating the existing arrangement. Following agreement between the seller and buyer, we replaced the older equipment with a new consumer unit.
Cove: planning for an EV charger
At a rural property with outbuildings, the customer wanted an EV charger. We discussed a separate charger supply board and an upgrade to the existing consumer unit.
The customer chose the upgrade. We also recorded the property’s electrical demand with a load logger over a week. Those readings helped inform how the charger could operate alongside the existing loads before we completed the consumer unit replacement and charger installation.
Tiverton area: moving a high-level consumer unit

A recent buyer wanted to upgrade their consumer unit and move it from its high position in the study.
We installed a junction enclosure at the original position and extended the wiring to a new consumer unit lower down the wall. This gave the customer a more accessible arrangement while accommodating their plans for further electrical work.
Silverton: upgrading alongside additional sockets

We first visited this customer to repair a heating programmer. Later, they asked us to install several additional socket positions.
We reassessed the installation for that larger job and recommended upgrading the existing arrangement. We consolidated two older fuse boards into one consumer unit and completed the additional socket work alongside it.
Central Tiverton: an extension and existing solar panels

The new owners of this property were planning a rear extension. The existing electrical arrangement included an older fuse board, solar PV equipment, a generation meter and separate isolators.
We replaced the consumer unit and reorganised the associated equipment, taking the existing solar installation into account and providing for the extension’s new circuits.
Back to topOn completion, we explain the new controls and provide an Electrical Installation Certificate. We also arrange the required Building Regulations notification within the applicable timeframe.
Certificates are supplied electronically, with printed copies available if needed. We retain copies of our certification records. If you’re working towards a property sale or another deadline, let us know so we can discuss the paperwork timetable with you.
Our work comes with a 10-year workmanship guarantee covering the installation work we carry out. Manufacturer warranties apply separately to the equipment fitted.
