The customer already had a Pod Point EV charger installed. Although the charger itself was operating correctly, it relied on a stable wireless connection because it does not support a direct Ethernet connection.
Looking ahead, the customer was also thinking about the next generation of smart meters. While current smart meters generally communicate using their own dedicated network, the industry is moving towards devices capable of utilising the homeowner’s own internet connection.
Rather than waiting until these technologies became commonplace, the customer wanted to prepare the property now.
Designing a Reliable Network Solution for a Rural Property Near Crediton
The challenge wasn’t simply extending Wi-Fi.
The solution needed to:
- Provide reliable connectivity to external electrical equipment.
- Avoid major disruption inside the property.
- Withstand long-term exposure to Devon’s weather.
- Allow for future expansion as additional connected technologies are introduced.
To achieve this, the existing internet connection was extended using SWA Cat5e cable to an external weatherproof enclosure.
Inside the enclosure, a 5-port Gigabit PoE switch was installed to distribute the network to two outdoor wireless access points.
One access point was positioned adjacent to the smart meter cabinet to improve future connectivity.
The second was installed adjacent to the existing EV charger, ensuring dependable wireless coverage exactly where it was required.
Using Power over Ethernet (PoE) meant both access points could receive power and data through the same cable, removing the need for separate local power supplies.
